The Joy of Missing Out: The Best Cabin to do Nothing in
When was the last time you allowed yourself to do nothing and didn’t feel guilty about it?
In a world that constantly nudges us to stay updated, connected, and productive, the idea of doing nothing can feel strangely radical. Yet that’s exactly why the “joy of missing out” has become such a powerful antidote to modern life. There’s something deeply restorative about stepping away from the noise and giving yourself permission to simply be.
Tanglebloom Cabin invites this shift the moment you arrive. With minimal service, your senses recalibrate.
Nature is often the first place we feel this shift. The pace of the natural world is unhurried, and calm. There’s a gentle invitation to match that rhythm. Out here, it's easier to notice the small things again. The way the trees sway with the wind. The warmth of the morning sun in the cabin. The crackle of a fire you built yourself.
Nestled in the woods of Vermont, lies this seasonal (May through October) off-grid glamping style cabin built by Mike and Melissa. Their mission is simple: to help others truly disconnect and experience the magic of nature without having to rough it. While that can have its own charm, sometimes it’s nicer to immerse yourself in nature while still having some comforts of home.
At Tanglebloom Cabin, you’ll find:
A cozy bed with an organic mattress
A hot outdoor shower with earthy plants and robes
A private fire pit with a good mountain view
Nearby hiking at Putney Mountain
A wood-fired hot tub (my favorite!)
A kitchenette with a small cooking area + fridge
An outhouse with a composting toilet
AND a sustainable flower farm!

Booking a stay with the intention to do nothing isn’t laziness; it’s a deliberate act of care. It’s a reminder that your worth isn’t tied to constant activity. When staying at Tanglebloom, you’re invited to really disconnect. That is, after all, what the space was designed to be for.
I’ve stayed here a few times and I’ve had the pleasure of growing my connection with Mike and Melissa while living in Vermont the last year. They are in a great location that is the truly the perfect balance of feeling “out there” while still being connected to civilization.
If you feel a little adventurous, there are plenty of things nearby to explore such as swimming holes around the Dummerston Covered Bridge, the Brattleboro farmers market, and even at outdoor music event at the Retreat Farm (every Thursday!). You can also visit the local shops and restaurants in the town of Newfane where the cabin lies.

Vermont is magical in every season and after experiencing each one intentionally, summer remains my favorite. Shimmering rivers that cut through the rolling green mountains. Open pastures around every corner. Markets buzzing with makers, farmers, and friendly locals.
I’ve traveled to and lived in many places but there is a magic here that makes the harsh winters worth it. If you find yourself needing a reset, I can’t recommend booking a stay here enough. And for my city friends! It’s only a 3 hour drive from Boston and New York. Your reset from the chaos of life is just a click away. Will you do yourself a favor and do nothing?
